Membership Meeting Aug 2025 collage

President’s Message

Dear Amigos,

Only a group of seasoned skiers and outdoor adventurers would shrug off a Texas thunderstorm as if it were just another powder day. Despite the downpour that greeted us in the parking lot, over 50 members showed up for our first membership meeting after the summer pause (April–July). What a fantastic way to kick off the season!

We had a smashin evening that touched on club updates, finances, upcoming events, and of course, our exciting trip lineup. A few highlights:

  • Socials & New Members – Our next Happy Hour is September 2 at Evil Olive Elixir Lounge, followed closely by Trivia Night on September 4. Both are great opportunities to relax, meet new members, and enjoy some friendly competition.

  • Trip Updates – Some ski trips are already “tracked out,” but don’t worry—if you’re interested in a sold-out trip, put your name on the waitlist. We’ll work with our tour operators to request more lodging if demand is strong. Other trips, like Alta, Banff, and the Napa Valley Bike Tour, still have space—so grab your pillow before they disappear!

  • Important Announcement – A member asked about the Quebec City to Boston cruise that was announced at Bidfest. Because cabins are no longer available, that trip has been replaced with the Islands of New England expedition trip for summer 2026. This trip—along with three others now on our calendar (Fall 2026 Expedition, Park City in January 2027, and Mt. Bachelor in March 2027)—is posted on our club website. We encourage you to register your interest now, so you’ll be the first to receive details as they become available.

  • Polls for Future Adventures – This is where YOU can shape our next adventures. Right on our Home Page, just below the trip calendar, you’ll find polls asking about Peru, Greece, scuba, and snorkeling. Please take a moment to cast your vote—your input directly guides the club trips we plan for in 2026–2027.

  • Membership Renewal Reminder – If you haven’t yet renewed your membership, please do so before September 1 to avoid a late fee. It only takes a moment online, and you’ll stay connected to all the fun ahead.

  • Volunteers Needed – Whether leading a trip or coordinating an interest group, lending a hand keeps our club vibrant. Being a trip leader is rewarding and fun!

  • Ikon Pass Reminder – Be sure to purchase by August 31 before prices climb higher than a gondola.

Full details are available in the [Membership Meeting Presentation slide deck], and you’ll find action buttons below to register, renew, and purchase your Ikon Pass.

Thanks to everyone who came out—thunder, rain, and all—to keep the Los Amigos spirit alive. I look forward to seeing you at Happy Hour and out on the slopes (or trails) soon!

Sun, Ski and Good Times,

Brian Goebel
President 2025-2026

Key Takeaways & Practical Guidance

If you’ve ever wondered whether travel insurance is worth it—or what type to get for a ski trip or international adventure—you’re not alone. I recently watched a webinar hosted by Myra Altschuler of Travel Protectors—twice, in fact—so I could distill the key takeaways for our members who may not have time to watch the full recording. The presentation didn’t include slides, so I took the liberty of organizing and simplifying the information to make it easier to understand and apply to our own trips.

What I especially appreciated about Myra is her long-standing experience with ski clubs like ours. She understands the kinds of trips we take and the questions we tend to ask, offering practical guidance that feels tailored—not generic. Whether you’re traveling across the country or overseas this season, her advice is worth a read.

Step Into Leadership!

Our adventures don’t happen without great leaders—and this could be you! Trip Leaders enjoy the reward of guiding a group of fellow Amigos on unforgettable journeys, with most of their trip expenses covered. We’re also looking for Interest Group Coordinators to keep our local activities thriving.

Right now, two exciting Texas Ski Council trip leader positions are open: the Islands of New England (Summer Expedition 2026) and the Tanzania  (Fall Expedition 2026).
