Details below:

A total solar eclipse is coming to South Texas. The last time this happened near
San Antonio was hundreds of years ago. These are so rare that most people have
never seen a total eclipse.
Visitors will come from around the world to see this eclipse.
They will come to San Antonio and South Texas because we are better placed
for this eclipse than anywhere else in the United States.

What better way to celebrate this once in a lifetime event than a Los Amigos eclipse party?

During the total eclipse, the sky will get dark (like night during a full moon),
the stars will come out, and the sun‘s corona will become spectacular.
Many places in San Antonio will not have a total eclipse or will only see a
few seconds of totality (darkness).

We are going to Kerrville because that is where we can best see the eclipse.
We will have
4 minutes and 28 seconds of totality
. The last big eclipse in the US (2017)
had no more than 2 minutes and 30 seconds of totality.
(See details below showing the difference between Kerrville and San Antonio)

The party will be at The Cafe on the Ridge, North of Kerrville.
The price is $60 per person for the use of the venue to watch this incredible eclipse.
The price includes a lunch (see menu below), drink coupons,
and eclipse glasses to safely watch the eclipse.

The party is open to Los Amigos members, their family, friends, kids,
grandkids, everyone.
We do not want to limit anyone for this incredible event.
We have a reservation at the Cafe on the Ridge for 200 people.
Sign up quickly for this once in a lifetime event.

Parking for the eclipse will be at a premium. We have reserved
two 56 passenger buses for those who want to relax and not worry about
drinking and driving. The buses will be staged at the Alzafar Shrine Temple
on north 1604 between Stone Oak and Blanco. The price for the bus will be $40.
This includes a tip for the driver and a donation to the Shriner Children’s Hospital
from Los Amigos for allowing us to use their parking lot.

It is important to sign up now.
We have limited space, especially on the buses
for this is truly a once in a lifetime event.

Total Solar Eclipse

A Total Solar Eclipse is when the moon completely covers (obscures) the sun, throwing a shadow on the earth. The area under the moon’s shadow experiences darkness and cooling temperatures. This is the most spectacular of all eclipses and something that everyone who experiences one wants to see again. This is different from a partial eclipse where only part of the sun is obscured by the moon. In 2017, a total eclipse occurred across the US but San Antonio only experienced a partial eclipse. Los Amigos did run a successful trip to experience the total eclipse in Wyoming. This time the total eclipse is coming to us.

It is also different from an Annular Eclipse where the moon doesn’t completely cover the sun leaving a ring of fire around the edge. On October 14th, an annular eclipse came right through San Antonio. But annular eclipses are not as spectacular or as special as a total eclipse. To truly appreciate a total eclipse, one must be as close to the center of the zone of totality. San Antonio isn’t close enough for this total eclipse.

South Texas is the best place to be for an eclipse that occurs in early April. Looking at the eclipse path (2nd image), as you head north along the path, the weather will become colder with overcast skies and more likely to be rainy and even snowy. South Texas is really the best place to be at this time of the year.

The first image below show the phases of an eclipse with partial coverage as the moon covers the sun until totality occurs. The second images shows the path of the total eclipse. The third image below shows how San Antonio and South Texas will experience the two eclipses. The blue path from Southwest to Northeast is the total eclipse.

Cafe on the Ridge

The Cafe on the Ridge is a well known venue just north of Kerrville. It has a cafe with great food, gardens, and an amphitheater that is perfect for our eclipse party. They are closed on mondays, but will open for the eclipse. They will provide food service, a set of drinks, a cash bar, toilets (an important feature), and the perfect venue to see the eclipse.

The Cafe on the Ridge is up on a ridge overlooking the approach of the eclipse. This means that we will see the shadow coming before it reaches our location. By being almost in the center of the eclipse path, we will have 4 minutes and 28 seconds of totality.

Below are photos of the Cafe on the Ridge. The large grassy area is the amphitheater. The two map shows the location of the venue with respect to the eclipse path (both close up and wide out). Note that one of the maps shows that only part of San Antonio will actually see the eclipse and only for seconds in some places.

We  have  bus transportation to the venue for those who just want to sit on a bus and relax. This is an event unlike any other. San Antonio hotels are already booking rooms. We have no idea how many people will be traveling out to the Hill Country from San Antonio but there will likely be  heavy traffic. The bus takes that burden off of you. In addition, parking at the Cafe on the Ridge may be limited.
